Cal Football Spring Practice Day 10

MEMORIAL STADIUM - The streak of perfect weather ended today with clear skies and chilly wind in today’s session at Memorial. Unlike yesterday’s spring-high three interceptions, there was only one INT on the day - a tough, acrobatic one-handed pick by INT machine cornerback Marcus Harris, who continued his spring run of stellar coverage and turnovers.

OLB coach/special teams coordinator Vic So’oto and OLB David Reese were on the media banner following practice to take questions on today’s action and spring ball so far.

"Just another jump," So'oto said of his outside linebacker unit. “This is the second spring ball that (David) Reese has had. "Third one that X (Xavier Carlton) has had. First one that Ryan (McCulloch) has had, so these guys are all taking the jumps that we're excited about when we recruited them here, and big expectations when we get into fall."

Here are some of the standout plays of the session:

11x11

  • Matthews with a 12-yard end-around
  • WR Trond Grizzell with difficult 15-yard grab from QB Fernando Mendoza
  • TE Jeffrey Johnson with a 17-yard TD catch from QB Chandler Rogers

7x7 Red Zone

  • 10-yard TD Mendoza TD pass to WR Jonathan Brady
  • Mendoza 10-yard TD pass to WR Marquez Dortch
  • 10-yard Rogers TD pass to WR Tobias Merriweather
  • 10-yard Rogers TD pass to WR Jonathan Brady
  • 10-yard Rogers TD pass to TE Ben Marshall
  • 10-yard Rogers TD pass to WR Isaac Torres

Final 11x11 Period

  • Two Mendoza 15-yard completions to TE Jack Endries
  • 10-yard Mendoza completion to Brady
  • 15-yard Rogers completion to Marshall
  • A diving knockdown by safety Cam Sidney
  • A booming 55-yard field goal by new kicker Ryan Coe, the second of two long FGs
  • A difficult 1-handed INT by on 30-yard Mendoza pass
  • Rogers to Marshall for 15-yard sideline catch
  • Tough Marshall sideline grab for 10-yards

Practice ended on another booming 56-yard field goal that cleared the crossbar by a good margin down the middle.

The team will be back in action tomorrow morning at 11 am for session 11 and is open to the public.
