Bears Add Another 4 Star Portal Transfer in LSU Safety Ryan Yaites

By Jim McGill
April 29, 2024

The Bears’ talented defensive backfield got deeper again today with the addition of LSU frosh safety Ryan Yaites‍ - the second 4 star frosh defensive backfield addition of the week for Cal.

As a true freshman, Yaites saw a decent amount of time on the field in a backup role and special teams, adding 16 tackles and a pass breakup for the Tigers.

Much like fellow 4 star DB commit Jasiah Wagoner‍, the Bears were a finalist for the Texas native, narrowly losing out to LSU for his commitment. As a prep at powerhouse John H. Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, Yaites added 63 tackles, 11 pass breakups and 2 interceptions playing both corner and safety, leading Guyer to a 14-1 record in his senior season. As a junior, he earned all-district honors with 42 tackles and 8 pass breakups for his 14-2 Guyer team that reached the Texas 6A Division II state championship game. He was also named to the prestigious Under Armour All-American Game.

Yaites joins portal DBs Jasiah Wagoner‍ and Marcus Harris‍ along with JC transfers Isaiah Crosby‍  and Ja’ir Smith as 2024 additions to their defensive backfield, a complete revamp of a unit that struggled through much of 2023 but should be a strength of the defense in the Bears’ inaugural ACC season. Yaites is the 36th overall addition to the 2024 class - a class that will make up an amazing 42% of the 2024 roster, with new players ranging from freshmen to seniors.‍

What a turnaround for the secondary! Building up a no-fly zone in Strawberry Canyon, you love to see it!

Welcome to The University of California Mr. Yaites!

It's great to see the upgrades in the defensive backfield, particularly where Cal has gotten guys who they had recruited but the player initially went elsewhere. Each party made a good impression on the other - sometimes it just takes a while to come to the right conclusion.

That being said, even the best defensive backfield needs a strong pass rush to be effective. Whether the scheme or the athletes, Cal needs huge improvement there!

Agreed. Why not both!?
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/donation/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 3% of alumni to give $100/mo. OR 6% to give $50/mo. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear
