California junior outfielder Seth Gwynn and freshman pitcher Trey Newmann have been named the Pac-12 Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, after leading the Golden Bears to four wins and a sweep of No. 5 Oregon State, the conference office announced Monday.

Gwynn, a native of Clayton, hit .500 (6-for-12) and slugged 1.250 in the 4-0 week. Three of his six hits were home runs, with one coming in each game against the Beavers over the weekend. He added four runs scored and six runs batted in.

Gwynn’s first home run of the weekend was a walk-off shot to give Cal a series-opening 10-8 win Friday night. He went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the finale on Sunday, and his home run in the bottom of the fourth gave the Bears a 2-1 lead. Later in the game, he drew a bases-loaded walk that plated what proved to be the game-winning run.

Gwynn is hitting .297 (27-for-91) with 19 runs scored and 19 RBI this season. His six home runs are tied for third on the team.

Newmann, the Central Point, Oregon native, pitched the final five innings of the series finale against the Beavers on Sunday. He struck out eight – six from the sixth inning on – and surrendered only one hit, a two-run home run in the sixth inning. He sealed the sweep by striking out the side in the ninth.

Newmann has struck out 41 batters in 40 innings pitched this season.

This marks the first time since Cal has won both the conference's Player and Pitcher of the Week at the same time since the final week of the 1998 season when the Pac-10 had awards for both the North & South Divisions.  That week (May 4) Xavier Nady was named the Player of the Week while Jason Dennis took home Pitcher of the Week

Cal returns to action on Tuesday when it takes its eight-game winning streak to Stockton, where it will take on Pacific. The Bears and Tigers are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and the contest will be streamed on ESPN+.

Quite a comeback for Newmann. To almost immediately giving up a walk and 2 run HR to lose the lead to Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for dominating the rest of the game.

His teammates rallied to support him. The essence of teamwork.
