I just reviewed Oregon State for this weekend and they have fared better in conference play than Cal has. They have one more win but have played two more games (two rainouts at UCLA). The Beavers have beaten every conference opponent except for Washington. They have captured two series against Utah & Arizona State.

This season Oregon State is primarily winning if they receive an excellent pitching performance. Many of their twenty victories are either shutouts or low scoring affairs. The Beavers have the weakest hitting that I can remember seeing in the Pac12 and only score 2.5 runs per game. OSU has three starting pitchers that have gone the distance for victories in the Pac 9. Two are juniors and the Texas transfer is a senior. Their collective ERA is approximately 3.50. Their pitchers have yielded quite a few home runs, however. The Beavers have shutout UCLA & Oregon in conference play. They lost to Washington in Seattle, 1-0.

Cal had better have their hitting shoes on this weekend because they will face one of the best pitching staffs over three games that they have seen. None of the big three are easy pickings. This series will be determined by playing good softball. The base running mistakes & infield errors could prove costly to Chelsea Spencer & Co.

OSU's pitcher Logan Hulon has emerged late in the season seemingly out of nowhere and has shown moments of dominance. It's reminiscent of Marissa Drewrey's breakout in 2007 when, as a freshman, she went from struggling to suddenly dominating in the last three weeks, including shutting down powerhouse teams like ASU and Washington.

If we win 2 out of 3, we're likely to secure the 7th seed. A sweep could land us the 6th seed and a matchup against UW, a team we know we can defeat. However, if we win 0 or 1, we'll find ourselves in a play-in game against ASU.

This series is absolutely crucial.

Today's win over a very good Nevada team should boost their confidence heading into the Oregon State series.

Go Bears!!!

Haylei Archer is wild and is putting 1 or 2 runners on base in each of the initial three innings via walk or hit batter.
Cal only has one hit by Elon Butler and ran into a crazy out at home by 20 feet. What is wrong with this team?

It looks to me like the Bears are playing in such a manner that an upset is feasible. The senior has stranded five over 3 IP and a Beaver runner also ran into an out at home.

Fortunately, Cal is hitting and has scored two runs on five hits to take an early lead, 2-0, in the B3rd..

While I absolutely hate the free passes...Cal is outhitting OSU 5 to 2 and currently up 2-0, FYI =)

Wow-what a four HR explosion in the B5th for Cal. Mika Lee walks it off, 9-0! Bears got two off of junior Ellie Garcia & two off of junior Sarah Haendiges.

Rain tomorrow. Game may not happen. Might have to do a double-header on Sunday.

Also heard that Sunday's game is sold-out! Senior Day!

Darn. Utah upsets #9 Washington.

We now need Washington to win these next two against Utah. We want the 6th seed. Not the 7th (facing Stanford).

Well, Utah beat the Huskies again today, 2-1.

It looks as if both the softball game & women's tennis match have been pushed back to 3pm starting times. I think that they might both get postponed until tomorrow. GO BEARS!

Acacia Anders was kicked out of the game after the first inning for using an illegal bat. Chelsea Spencer also was kicked out -- it's automatic when a player use an illegal bat. No other details available.

Lagi Quiroga connects on a two-run bomb to LCF to push Cal into a 3-1 lead in the B5th. Mika Lee was on base after a solid double to left-center gap. Elon Butler boots a ground ball to kick-off the T6th and Ryann Orange enters to relieve Randi Roelling. Today, Orange could not throw a strike and walked two batters in a row so RR was brought back into the game to get out of a bases loaded jam with one out. She struck out the first batter on a 3-2 pitch and got the second batter to popout to 1B on 3-2 count. Great job!

Randi Roelling throws a complete game two-hitter for the win. She yielded a bunt single and a long HR to RF. She struck out four and walked none. The freshman is showing improvement. GO BEARS!

Any idea why Anders's bat was illegal? Haven't heard any explanation given yet.

^ kryptonite in the barrel (actually opposing coaches approve each of their opponent's bats with bright colored approved labels put on the bats, acacia batted without a beaver tag on the bat)

drag racing thru the canyon (one final time with virtually unlimited futures with berkeley degrees)#

Interestingly enough, Cal has hit two home runs against all three of Oregon State's ace pitchers.

Haylei Archer walks the lead-off hitter on four pitches and she scores on a single to RF by Lici Campbell. Beavers jump out to a 1 run lead.

Lagi Quiroga quickly ties the game with a lead-off HR to tie her teammate, Elon Butler, for the conference lead w/ 16 round-trippers each.

Senior Tatum Anzaldo doubles, Tianna Bell follows with a single to center and Acacia Anders wallops a double to give the Bears a 2-1 lead.

Hulon comes in relief and stops Cal cold. Butler pops up, Pond strikes out and Alley flies out to RF.

Also, props to HC Spencer for allowing her top hitters to swing away and all four delivered solid base hits. KO'd the starter in four batters by not implementing the sac bunt strategy.

utah/washington game rained out, this means that if the bears win today they will be 10-12 & in 6th place ahead of 7th place utah at 10-13 in the pac 12

this would be huge as the 6th place team will play a very beatable washington on a neutral field (actually probably more bears fans that huskies fans in palo alto) vs the 7th place team that will play arguably the nation's #1 pitcher canady on stanford's home field

gotta win today!!!

huge props to coach spencer in the bottom of the 1st inning holding up the base runner at 3rd base with no outs instead of sending her home to a high risk out at home plate...conserve the outs, play the long ball

HUGE that the UW-Utah game was cancelled.

Our fate is officially in our hands. A W gets us the #6 seed against a Washington team that is frankly not playing well.

It's been tough getting anything going against Hulon.

When do you think fatigue might set in from pitching yesterday?

Mika Lee is back in the lineup. I believe that she homered off of the Texas transfer. Whoops-my memory was incorrect. The two HRs hit off her yesterday were by Elon Butler and Lagi Quiroga.

Uh oh. OSU homers to put themselves up 4-3 in the 6th.

Three run dinger off of Archer's change-up puts the Beavers in front of the Bears 4-3. Cal has six outs renaining to tie or go ahead. If they fail, Utah will finish 6th and face Washington. Cal will stay in 7th and be matched up with Stanford in the Pac 9 Softball Tournament.

Senior Haylei Archer had only allowed one hit through 5 IP. She retired nobody in the T6th.

Cal rallies in the B6th to re-take the lead 5-4 on an incredibly clutch double to LC by Mika Lee. Both Elon Butler and Kaylee Pond scored with two outs. Mika Lee has become an invaluable player on this team!

I would. I have no idea why we haven't... OSU has now loaded the bases with 0 outs.

I will never understand some of these pitching decisions. Roelling has shown that she struggles in the 7th pretty consistently. Bring in a veteran to help her!

2:12p, 5/5/24
And now it's 6-5 OSU.
Schroeder71

Defense begins to fail. First an infield hit to SS. Then a pop-fly falls between 2B & RF for a single. Next Gottlieb singles to CF to load the bases. Campbell proceeds to earn a walk to tie the game with nobody out. Cal goes for a double play on a ground ball to SS rather than going home and gives up the lead (6-5). Mika Lee throws out a runner at the plate from medium deep RF for an incredible DP.

Bears have three outs left. Cal finishes seventh place in the conference. It most likely eliminates any chance of the Bears hosting a regional. Often six Pac 9 teams have been able to host. Cal has the fourth best overall record in the conference, but I doubt that they'll take a 7th place team.

Cal's pitching and defense could not come through in the clutch to hold the lead that Mika Lee generated. We all knew that was a possibility. The team's weakness has been pitching and infield defense. Why didn't the infield defense go for the force out at home plate to deny Oregon State taking the lead? It's awfully late in the game to concede the go-ahead run.

Disappointing that neither Haylei Archer or Randi Roelling could hold late leads against such a poor offensive team like the Beavers. OSU only averaged 2.5 runs per game and beat the Bears, 6-5, on Senior Day. Wow!

3 outs to go with our top 3 hitters up. Now it's really time to fight!
